08.23David Coulthard tests the Caddy TDI Racer
One of the more unusual driver-car pairings in Volkswagen Racing’s history took place in May at Goodwood circuit. Red Bull Racing’s David Coulthard took the chance to spend a day in a Volkswagen Caddy TDI racer – a front-drive 260bhp turbodiesel van that we have run in the Volkswagen Racing Cup for the past 4 years. About as far removed from an F1 car as you can imagine… and the bemused look on his face when he peeled into the pits after a few laps said it all.
David’s reaction after his first drive: ‘Well… that was interesting! I don’t know why I bothered with Formula 1 for all those years – diesel vans are obviously where it’s at! I went into the first corner, locked up the rear wheels and started looking for the best place to crash. But seriously, it’s a little slower than I’m used to, but having a go in this Caddy is great fun. It’s ten years since I’ve driven a manual car!
The day was filmed by the BBC, and Fifth Gear’s Tiff Needell turned up to have a go in the Caddy – in a race with David, which will be shown in the next series of Channel 5’s motoring programme.
Coulthard is not the first motorsport celebrity to drive the Caddy TDI, as ex-British Touring Car Champion Jason Plato raced the van at Brands Hatch in 2004.
